School Drop off/Pick up Safety
Safety is of primary importance in the morning and afterschool when students are being dropped off or picked up.
We are especially concerned about student safety in that area directly in front of the school door/bike racks and along the east side of the school adjacent to visitor parking. It is within this area that busses for our special needs students complete their drop off/pick ups.
In order to protect the safety of students at these critical times the school blocks the north entrance to the parking lot with pylons. This takes place in the morning at approximately 8:30 a.m. and in the afternoon at around 3:20 p.m.
A couple of MidSun students have taken on the task of putting out the pylons. While they allow the busses for special needs students to enter the parking area, they have been asked to refuse entry to parents who also may be attempting to enter the parking area. Our expectation is that all parents will honour this system in the interest of safety for all students.
There have been two recent incidents in which parents proceeded toward or into the parking area when the pylons were out and in spite of being asked to refrain by the two students. In one case a parent drove over a book bag and onto the grassy area adjacent to the entrance and was verbally defiant of the students’ request. In the second case a car nearly clipped one of the students as it proceeded between the pylons and entered the parking lot. In the second case a license plate number was recorded and the school has contacted the School Resource Officer, Constable Mair. Please be aware that any/all traffic infractions around the school may be reported to Calgary Police Services for investigation and/or charges.
We expect that parents will respect the restricted access to the parking lot during both the morning and afterschool drop off/pick up times.

Results an ELL Report Cards come home November 14
Look for your child's results report card coming home on Wednesday November 14, 2012. Our students have been engaged in their Laker Life classes to understand how to develop their citizenship, character and personal development at school. They have generated specific, personal goals in each area. Our teachers have reviewed the goals and have developed comments that will help students find strategies to attain their goals. We hope that parents will work with their children at home to support this work. Students and teachers will have an opportunity to evaluate the goals in March and in June. A summative evaluation for the work each student does in these areas will be on their June report card.
English second language learners will also have an ELL benchmark reporting coming home on Wednesday. This should give parents an idea of the level that their child is working at in English and provide strategies for their next steps in learning.
Option classes will be sending home an email mark update on Wednesday as well. Please try to support your child to complete any outstanding work for their option classes as soon as possible. Feel free to contact their teachers for support. Our completion room remains open Monday to Thursday for one hour afterschool in the library to support students with their work.
A mark update for all classes will come home on December 10, 2012. This will help parents determine which teachers they will want to see at our interviews scheduled for December 20th from 2:00-4:30 PM and December 21st from 9:00-Noon. You can book your interviews starting at 6:00 AM on December 17, 2012. Teachers may be inviting some parents in for a group interview prior to the 17th as those parents will have priority at this interview period.
If you have any questions or concerns about reporting, please feel free to attend our parent council meeting tonight, November 13, 2012 at 7 PM in the library commons.

2012 MidSun Food Drive for the Calgary Poppy Fund
This week, we will be running a food drive in support of the Calgary Poppy Fund. The fund was formed in 1927 by the Royal Canadian Legion to help veterans and their dependants who are in need. Over the years, there has been a growing need for services that rely on the poppy fund. One such service is the Veteran's Food Bank, which has been sending out more than 70 food hampers a month, compared to 50 hampers a month last year, and 25 hampers a month three years ago. The Poppy Fund also collects cash donations to help support veterans pay for their medications, and rent in emergency situations, among other things.
On Friday morning, students will all receive a poppy. Please bring in a donation for this poppy. (Suggest $2!)
Please bring in non-perishable food items TUESDAY OR WEDNESDAY.
Ideas for Non-Perishable Donations: any canned or boxed foods (due to our commitment to provide our clients with quality food we cannot accept food that is out-dated) baby formula, baby food and diapers toiletries paper products
