On Thursday June 20, 2013, we held our awards assemblies for the 2012-2013 school year.  Many students were recognized for their outstanding achievement.  In the grade 8 assembly, a surprise award was given to our very own Mr. Strachan for making math cool! Mr Strachan was one of 17 teachers in the province to be recognized by APEGA for excellence in teaching math and science to MidSun students.  The award comes with a $2000 grant that Mr. Starchan can spend to improve math and science instruction at MidSun. Congratulations to Mr. Strachan and all of our award winners!

Final Day Update

Good Afternoon Parents and Students
We hope this message finds you and your families safe and dry.
We want to send you an important update concerning MidSun School's textbook return and report card pickup.
On Thursday June 27 2013, there will be NO BUSSES.  Parents are responsible for transportation to and from school.  This is a change from our last update.  Students will have a staggered entry in order to return any textbooks and library books as well as pick up report cards and refundable security deposit cheques.
Grade 9 students are asked to report to their TA with their textbooks at 9:00 AM
Grade 8 students at 9:45 AM
Grade 7 students at 10:15 AM
The process should take us between an hour and an hour and a half.  Students are free to go once they have been given their report cards.
Please note there will be NO Grade 9 Farewell activity due to the situation.  Some of our grade 9 parents have requested that the money that was collected for the Calaway trip be donated to the Red Cross for flood relief.  Any grade 9 parent who would prefer to receive a refund please let us know by Wednesday June 26 at Noon in order for us to have your cheque ready for pickup on Thursday.
All final marks will be calculated by averaging first and second terms with the exception of Language Arts where 10% of the mark will come from the LA Part A Final that was written in May.
Thank you for your patience as we muddle through this unexpected end to our year.
Have a safe and happy summer.
Please check our website for school start up information.

Midsun Book Club Wrap-up

The last meeting (and a yummy lunch) was held on June 12 for the two book clubs.  The Grade eight students enjoyed Home in Time for Dinner by Kathryn Ellis. The Grade sevens loved All These Things I’ve Done by Gabrielle Zevin, as much as the grade eights had. Many students have read the sequel, Because it is my Blood and are anxiously awaiting the release of the third book this fall. This would be a good choice for some engaging reading this summer.
Speaking of summer, the book club participants plan to read The Hobbit over the summer so we can discuss it next fall. Many students also enjoyed April Henry’s Shock Point. Her thrillers are a great way to entice even reluctant readers because they are definite page-turners. Her new book The Girl Who Should Have Died is on my summer reading list.
We look forward to welcoming new members in the fall. Happy reading this summer. Teens check out calgarypubliclibrary.com/teens for details on their summer reading program. There are weekly and grand prizes.

Track and Field Wrap up

A huge thank you to all of our coaches and athletes for getting ready for the track & field season!  There were many hours of training and coaching put in so that our athletes would know how to run, jump and throw!  It would have been great for our athletes to have the opportunity to compete, however Mother Nature did not want to cooperate with us this year.  The initial track meet was scheduled for May 22nd at Glenmore Athletic park.  We attempted to have our meet that day, but by 9:00am the skies opened up and the rain began to fall.  Students had the opportunity to compete in any events scheduled between 9-11 and ribbons were handed out to athletes that placed from 1st to 8th.  There will be no team championship banner handed out as not enough of the events were completed.  We did re-schedule an alternate day (May 31st) and it too decided to have rain in the forecast.  The four schools competing against each other this year were: Mountain Park, Tom Baines Branton and MidSun.  Thank you to our parent volunteers: Michelle Spirenburg and Audrey Wilkins for braving the rain at the finish line!
Hopefully next year, we will have better luck with the weather!
