Explorer Idol

Today, our students were treated to the musical "Explorer Idol".  Three actors told the story of 6 explorers and we voted one of them explorer idol! Find out who won and why by asking your student. Special thanks to the School Council who sponsored the performance.

WE Day

23 students from MidSun attended the long awaited WE DAY on Wednesday October 24th at the Saddledome. We were energized by the amazing speakers and inspirational stories from Spencer West, Larry King, Liz Murray, Craig and Mark Keilburger and Martin Sheen. Not to mention performances by Hedley, Lights, Sean Desman and a surprise performance by Marianna Trench. The students were amazed, inspired empowered by the day and already well on their way to making a change in our community and in the world.

Two upcoming events:
October 29th to November 9th. We SCARE Hunger. MidSun families and students are asked to send in non-perishable food items for the Vetran’s Food Bank. This is a TA challenge. Points are awarded for items brought to your TA.

November 1 to November 30th. WE CREATE CHANGE. As we all know pennies are on their way out of circulation. MidSun students with support of RBC will be collecting pennies for water. 1,000,000,000 people live without clean water in the world. 2500 pennies means water for 1 person! Help make a change in someone’s life today. Send in your pennies!

We at Midsun are committed to making a change in the world both at home and abroad. Help support our initiatives and stay tuned for more to come!

Take Our Kids to Work Day

Attention Grade 9 Students and Parents!

November 7th , 2012 is Take Our Kids to Work Day.  This is not a CBE field trip but an opportunity presented by the Learning Partnership (www.thelearningpartnership.ca/page.aspx?pid=250) and supported by the CBE.  It is a chance for grade 9 students to see a workplace in action and find out what their parents do on a daily basis.

If your child is interested in attending work with you on November 7th,  please complete the form distributed in Laker Life and have your child return it to their homeroom teacher as soon as possible.

Extra forms can be found on the grade 9 Laker Life D2L shells.

Possible Bus Delay for Buses A, D & G

October 23, 2012

 Dear Parents:

We have just been informed by Southland Transportation, that they anticipate a delay on Wednesday October 24 due to We Day routes.  It is always possible that there will be unforeseen delays due to traffic or weather, but in addition they are already aware that the bus routes listed below will have the following time delay:

                   Fish Creek "A'/MidSun "A"  -  15 minute delay
                   Fish Creek "D"/MidSun "D" -  15 minute delay
                   MidSun "G"                        -   15 minute delay

Since the end of We Day is earlier than rush hour, we don't anticipate particular delays but depending on the weather there may be delays returning to the school.

Thank you for your understanding.

Yours truly,
Veronica Saretsky
Principal, Midsun School

Midsun School Parent Council Update

MIDSUN SCHOOL PARENT COUNCIL UPDATE

This is a reminder that the next MidSun Parent Council Meeting is tonight, Thursday October 11, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. in the Library Commons. Agenda items will include grade 7 programming, our new laker life course and a discussion about our dress code.

Volunteers Needed …

The MidSun Parent Council is looking for someone who would be interested in taking on the Executive role of Secretary. If you are interested in taking on this role, please contact Kim B.(outgoing Secretary), at kjbender@telus.net.

Secretary’s Role - attends all meetings (if possible) to keep accurate minutes which are in turn forwarded to the school’s office staff for posting on the school web site (2-3 hrs bi-monthly).

Financial Reviewer - Parent Council is also looking for a volunteer parent to review Council's financial statements up to April 30, 2012.  This is our year-end.  It is not difficult and would not take long.  This second look by a non-Executive member is required in the Council bylaws.

The MidSun Book Fair will be held in the gym from Oct 22-Oct 26, during parent teacher interviews.  If you are interested in covering a Book Fair volunteer shift, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator, Kim B., at kjbender@telus.net.

Grant Writer - School Council is also looking for a volunteer parent or parents who would be interested in researching and writing up Grant Proposals / Applications.  If you are interested in helping out in this area, please attend an upcoming Parent Council meeting, or let the Principal (Ms. Saretsky) know of your interest.

Thank you, again, to all our parent volunteers for your continued support.

Book club info

Both MidSun Book Clubs had their first meeting yesterday.  The Grade 7 Book Club will be reading Kenneth Oppel’s  “The Dark Endeavour:  The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein,” and the Grade 8/9 student’s will be reading “Divergent,” the first book in a trilogy by Virginia Roth.

The students who attended had great ideas about which books they’d like to read in the future.  The next meeting will be held at lunchtime on Wednesday, November 7th in the Guidance Office.

There is still room for other students to join the two book clubs.   See Mrs. Bergh in the Library for a more information and a parent permission form.

Grade 9 Parent Reminder

Grade 9 parents are asked to check out the invitation to Centennial High School's open house to the left of the blog on our website.  We would also appreciate it if you can remind your child to return their immunization forms ASAP.  These forms are generated by Alberta Health Services and are very difficult to replace.  It is important that the forms are returned to home room teachers right away! Thanks

Congratulations to Soccer and Cross Country Runners!

It was a wonderful weekend for Laker Soccer with our girls finishing off with a silver and our boys winning gold at the tournament this weekend!  Well done. Special thanks to our coaches, Josh Woods, Rich Pratt and Sean Slaughter for working with our MidSun soccer teams.  Mr. Harris, pictured above, was our cross country coach and worked as a marshall at the finals which were held last night at River Park.  Although our team was small in numbers, they were big on ribbons and many of them had personal bests as they crossed the finish line.  Thanks to all the fans who came out to support our Lakers!
