News From the Band Room

All morning rehearsals will resume next week, and start at 8:00 am.  The room is always open by 7:45 am so kids have time to set up, do some personal warm-up and say hello to their friends.
Monday- Jr. Jazz Band
Tuesday- Grade 8 Band
Wednesday- Grade 9 Band
Thursday- Sr. Jazz Band

Morning rehearsals are mandatory for all band students and are necessary to help prepare our music on a continual basis.  Band is a team sport, and works best when all team members are present!

All students attending spring band camps need to have a parent representative at the Band Camp Parent Information Night.  This is MANDATORY under CBE Off-Site Activities regulations for all overnight trips.  Please attend our meeting on THURSDAY, APRIL 9TH at 7:00PM.  I realise that this is also Parent Council meeting night and some of you are involved in both sessions.  If you are involved in both meetings, please try to be present for your portion of the meeting.

After the meeting, I am required to either meet or talk on the phone with any parents that did not attend the meeting.  As we have nearly 300 kids involved in band, even 90% attendance will still result in approximately 5 hours of contact time to catch up with all the parents unable to attend the meeting.  Please do you best to be in attendance on the 9th in order for your child to attend our upcoming camps.  Thanks in advance!

Our last fundraising opportunity of the year ends on Wednesday, April 1st.  Please ensure orders and money are turned into Mrs. Shipley in the band office by end of day Wednesday.  Once all orders have been processed, an update of your fundraising totals will be available by April 9th.  We will email this information home and have it available at the parent meeting.

Mr. Campbell will be performing Philip Sparke’s Carnival for alto saxophone and wind orchestra on Monday, April 13th at the Westwinds Music Society’s Spring Concert.  This takes place at the Lord Beaverbrook Theatre at 7:00 PM.  Tickets are available at the door and are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.  Lord Beaverbrook High School is located at 9019 Fairmount Dr. SE, Calgary, AB T2H 0Z4

Thanks everyone for your continued support!

Mr. Campbell

Spring has Sprung at MidSun!

Our talented MidSun students have been front and centre this week with our grade seven band winning a gold award at the city's band festival this week!  All of our bands performed very well and all brought home awards.  Congratulations to Mr. Campbell and his band students!

Yesterday, leadership students hosted a talent show where our student performers treated us to some wonderful displays of talent.  We heard from singers, pianists, a violinist and guitarist. There were also great displays of Taewondo, baton twirlling, break dancing and more that proved without a doubt that  MidSun's got talent!

We are preparing to hold parent teacher interviews tonight and tomorrow.  You can get the most out of the interviews by brining your child and preparing three questions you would like to have addressed.  If you provide those questions in the comments section of your booking, teachers can be prepared to answer them.  Arrive  5-10 minutes in advance so that you don't lose time with any of your teachers.  We are making every effort to keep to our schedule and have made this a priority.  We are looking forward to seeing you there.

Our School Council will be out in full force over the parent teacher interview times to speak with parents about supporting the school in a variety of ways.  They are raising funds for cross-country skis, Chromebooks and a 3D printer.  Three ways you can support the school without it costing you any money are:
1) Purchase your groceries through our Grocery Gift Card program
2) Mention MidSun when purchasing at Cobbs bakery (Can you say hot crossed buns?)
3)Get a free quote from Allstate and mention Midsun. You may save some insurance $ and they give us $25

Lastly, we have begun to prepare for next year and while the budget has not been released yet, the CBE is anticipating some severe cuts.  You are encouraged to give your suggestions for priority areas and ways to save money on our CBE website at: http://bit.ly/1GuGijx
Also, if any returning students' parents wish to make a request for a specific teacher for next year, they are asked to send an email to vrsaretsky@cbe.ab.ca with the request before April 10, 2015.  While we can not guarentee that we will be able to accomdate the request,  we will consider it when we are planning the classes for the next school year.

From all of us at MidSun, have a wonderful break!

Parent Teacher Conference Booking Opens March 16!

This is a reminder to go online and book for our upcoming parent student teacher conferences using Conference Manager. These are scheduled for Thursday March 19, from 5:30-8:00pm, and Friday March 20, 2015 from 9:00 am-12:00 pm.

Teachers have been contacting parents of students that they believe need some extra support and booking appointments this week.

The site opens for booking by parents at 6:00 am on Monday March 16, 2015 and closes at 12:00 pm on Friday March 20, 2014.  Each time slot is 5 minutes. Core teachers recommend booking two consecutive sessions. You may add any comments to let the teacher know if you have a particular concern you would like to talk about. Be sure to put travel time between interviews.

You are able to view marks and attendance records on HomeLogic on a consistent basis now. Please check your child’s information prior to your appointment so you can have the most up to date information available to you as you discuss your concerns.  For more information about Home Logic, please go to http://schools.cbe.ab.ca/b691/parents.htm and click on HomeLogic introduction for parents. You can log in to HomeLogic by going to https://sirswebapps.cbe.ab.ca/homelogic/

We hope that this will allow our teachers to be prepared for your interviews and make the time more productive for everyone. Please call our office at 403-777-6430 if you have any concerns.
