What a great start up!

Last week we had a beautiful morning rainbow over MidSun!  It was a wonderful symbol of all the things we are thankful for!

It has been a busy month and our Lakers are already accomplishing many things.  Our Cross Country running team has already brought home many ribbons at our last meet.  With hundreds of runners this is quite an accomplishment!  Congratulations to the team and these ribbon winners:
Junior Boys:
Jack Z. 5th, Ethan D.  6th
Intermediate Girls:
Julia F.  4th
Intermediate Boys:
Carson P. 3rd, Michael R.  6th, Joel F.  7th
Senior Girls:
Natalie H.  4th
Senior Boys:
Alex R.  2nd, Sam M. 6th

We are looking forward to the next meet on October 1, 2014!

Our Volleyball teams are in full swing and are also doing well.  Our junior boys came in second at a tournament at Strathcona Tweedsmuir on the weekend and our senior girls had some outstanding competition at Rally Pointe.  Volleyball action continues in our Laker Dome on Tuesday (Sr. girls) and Wednesday (Sr. boys) night this week.  Come catch a game and cheer on your Lakers!

Our Re-Teach It (RTI) class will begin on October 1, 2014.  RTI is a dedicated period each Wednesday where students can go to sessions from any teacher to get support with that weeks learning targets.  Parents should encourage their child to take advantage of these sessions and help them select the one that will best support their learning needs. During the month of September we have used RTI time to hold a Terry Fox assembly in preparation for the Terry Fox run (held last Thursday),  have pod talks that set the expectations for each grade and review our  reporting methods of the Calgary Board of Education's Results Statements of Character, Citizenship and Personal development.

MidSun is a "School of character" and we value and encourage the development of positive character traits in our studnets.  Each month teachers select a Laker of the Month for each grade.  These are students who have shown outstanding character, citizenship and/or personal development over the month. Congratulations to these hard working and caring students who are our first Laker of the Month Award winners:
Grade 7 - Halliemarie L.who supported many peers over the month
Grade 8 - Sarah S.  who was a big helper with our start up activities
Grade 9 - Adam S. who encouraged our whole school with his speach at the Terry Fox Run assembly
These winners receive a certificate and a free sandwich complements of the Midnapore Subway!  Way to go!

A great support for students is our Completion Room.  This is held after school from Monday to Thursday in Room 10 for an hour and 15 minutes.  It is run by an educational assistant and any student can elect to attend.  Here they can have access to computers, books and other learning tools to finish their work.  They can meet with group members to complete projects or get support from an adult with concepts they are unsure of.  Students who do not complete their work will be asked to attend the completion room until it is done and handed in to their teachers.  Teachers want to be able to accurately report on a student's achievement and they can only do this when all assignments are completed and handed in. The completion room supports this aim.

Art club, book club and ENVOE hikes have all started with many students taking advantage of the opportunity to follow their passions.  Grade eight students are looking forward to the Riverwatch field trip that takes place in October and is a great hands-on way to learn about the importance of preserving our watershed.  We have also begun planning this year's Band and French trips.  These are all exciting ways students can experience the curriculum in the real world.

Thank you to so many of you that made it out to our "Meat the teacher" evening.  Even the cold weather couldn't bring us down!  Students introduced their parents to their teachers and the BBQ was enjoyed by many! We have a new School Council and many thanks to our new executive.  We still need to have home room representation at our council meetings and we hope you will join us at the next one.  The date has changed to October 16, 2014 at 7 PM in our MidSun Library Commons. Grocery Gift card information just went out last week and we are looking for your support with this important fundraiser.  We are hoping to bring in two amazing authors for our first Wordfest slated to be held the week after Thanksgiving!  Thanks for your fundraising to bring them in for our students!

Teacherlogic will be updated with the first set of student marks on October 17th.  All assignments marked from September 2- October 10 will be available for your perusal.  Please note if there are any missing assignments and work together with your child and their teacher to get them handed in.

We have already done so much and there is much more to come!  Happy Fall!

Grocery Gift Card Program 2014 Start Up

The MidSun Education Enhancement Society proudly raises funds to support MidSun learners.  Their biggest fundraiser is the Grocery Gift Card Program.  This is a perfect way to support your school without costing your family anything extra or buying items you do not really want to have.  Everyone buys groceries and your grocery dollars can be used to purchase much needed education enhancement items for our students.  It works like this: you order grocery gift cards from us, we bulk order the cards from the grocery stores.  The grocery stores pay us back a percentage of the sales (once we meet a minimum purchase amount). You pick up the grocery gift cards once every month and use them dollar for dollar to pay for your groceries.  It is a win-win!

Bright pink order/information forms are being sent home with your child this week. Please take this easy opportunity to support our school's fundraising efforts. Order forms are also available on the website. http://schools.cbe.ab.ca/b691/council.htm

At this time we will not be accepting credit and debit card payments. Cash or Cheque only.

Thank you for your support.

TERRY FOX INFO

Tomorrow the MidSun staff and students will be participating in the Terry Fox Run.  This is an activity the whole school will be participating in.  Students need to be dressed appropriately for sun or rain, and proper running shoes are needed.  We recommend they wear their PE shoes.

If your child needs an inhaler or has the potential to need an epipen, these items need to be shown to their homeroom teacher before they are allowed to depart.

SCHOOL START UP FORMS

If you have not seen any start of school forms to sign from your child, please go to our website, http://schools.cbe.ab.ca/b691/default.htm and on the left hand side of the page under "School Forms and Handbook."  There is a list of forms that need to be printed and signed by both you and your child and returned to the school.  We have copies in the office as well, if you are unable to print the documents.

The Science teachers need the Lab Safety Contract signed and returned before your child can participate in labs.
